Hola from Mexico
It is my last night with our wonderful youth and the kids at Casa de Ninos. Today we had our first day of vacation bible school. The energy of our youth matched the enthusiasm of the 55 plus neighborhood kids. You wouldn't believe how fast our youth are speaking Spanglish, whether leading games, music, crafts or telling a bible story. Your financial support allowed us to buy nine hundred dollars of paint and the dorms and dining hall look terrific. Your financial support allowed us to hire a contrator to build an overhang which shades the dining hall bringing down the room temperature and catching the breeze. Our fundraising allowed us to share meals with the vbs kids- some who don't get many meals and rarely get treats like koolaid and popsicles.
Along with all the kids, I met a lawyer at VBS doing translation, back in school to be a kindergarten teacher. The drug trafficking has meant she had to give up her practice to protect her kids.
Today we spent the day on the beach and loved the warm waves, the overcast sky ( mucho degrees better than the clear skies!) and the breeze under the palapas. Now we are gathering for evening devotions. Today's text is "Blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted". We lifted up Debbie Duncan and the gifts she brought esp to the WBR, and Trudy and Ed Duncan in their loss. I am only sorry I only spent one afternoon during Lent with Debbie learning about the crosses hanging around the church, ones that Debbie spent a lifetime collecting. We give thanks to God for her life and spirit and trust that the church is offering comfort on our behalf.
As I prepare to leave for Canon City, Colorado and the Conference School of Mission, moving from Mexican poverty and joy to the tragedy and hope in the Sudan, I think of how blessed I have been in my first year to partcipate in so many stretching activities, getting to know so many folks with their own joys and pain. I'll be home Saturday night and back in worship with you Sunday morning. Que Dios les bendiga.
