Tues 6 July 2010

This morning Rex was in "heaven". We rented a backhoe for 2-3 days so he can do numerous projects here at the home! After renting the backhoe, Rex started leveling various areas while Mark and AJ started scraping areas to paint and they painted the front of the dining hall. I headed to the grade school graduation at the school, then ran to Home Depot for more supplies, then went to the airport to pick up the rest of the group. I was so impressed! Once some of them went through customs, they stayed in the waiting area before exiting until their entire group was together. Our youth had been told to stay together always while traveling and they did!! WAY TO GO CUMC YOUTH AND ADULT CHAPERONES!!!!! It's great having our group here and watching them interact with the children.

After arriving at the home today, Rex put everyone to work prepping the patio for the cement which arrives tomorrow morning, and scraping walls. You can see David re-stringing 5 old youth guitars the home had in storage. Jackie is sewing shower and toilet stall curtains.

Hola from Mexico! Kate, Tyler and I are sitting here, sweating more than we've ever sweat in our entire lives. Did we mention it was unseasonably cool today, and it's nighttime?

We arrived in Mazatlan this afternoon after a LONG couple of flights. It's still a mystery to us where the city is (just kidding...sort of). Most of us slept on the flight, especially on our way to Phoenix. Kate was quite disappointed to hear that she missed out on the free pretzels because she was asleep.

On the ride to Hogar de Ninos, we found ourselves driving through an extremely impoverished area. Most of the houses were run down and crumbling, and there were a lot of thin dogs wandering the streets. However, you'd never know the children were living in such poverty from the warm welcome they gave us. They were so excited to see us! A boy named Chui came up and gave each and every one of us a hug right from the start, and already the kids are teasing us like they've known us for years. Those of us who speak Spanish are getting in a lot of practice -- we're in rather high demand, because the kids have found they can talk with us, and our team members want us to translate for them. We're being pulled in two directions -- I'm figuring we'll end up in the nuthouse if we aren't pulled to one side or the other. We're working on teaching everyone else Spanish.

Did we mention it's hot out? Tyler is fantasizing about slushies, and Kate is fantasizing about hand sanitizer. She nearly had a heart attack when she couldn't find her hand sanitizer immediately after our arrival. Good thing she's making a ring of bug spray and sanitizer around her bed tonight.

We're really glad we're here, and we're excited to continue making a difference in the lives of these kids.

Much love, Kate, Tyler and Becca
